Analysis of Top Selling Cars in September 2025 in India

It’s 2025. The month of September has just ended. As enthusiasts, let us look at the 25 top-selling cars in the month of September in India, to get a fresh perspective of the Indian market, and what Indians want in their car.
Usually, you expect a Maruti Suzuki to be at the top of the list. However, Tata turns out to be the dark horse and makes a statement with the Nexon. The Nexon is the best-selling car for 2025, with a whopping 22,573 units sold, becoming the best-selling Tata model and making September Tata’s record month. From this, we know that people are in an aspirational mood, trying to get a fancy SUV instead of a utilitarian hatchback, and features, looks, and value for money have more importance than simplicity and affordability. Which is why there are no hatchbacks in the top 5, the usual sales chart champions-the WagonR, Swift, Fronx and the Baleno being at the bottom of the top 10 list. The bottom line-people want feature-rich, good-looking, and expensive looking sub-4m SUVs. The Dzire is a close second, proving that the changes that Maruti Suzuki made to the Dzire worked and people love it now, and think of it more highly than they did earlier.
Analyzing the winner, it was observed that the CNG and EV sales have increased, and people are going for them more often. For Tata, CNG sales have hit record numbers, and EV sales have doubled year-on-year. The change in GST rates is prompting people to book and buy now instead of waiting for later. OEMs have seen the amount of bookings double when GST rates were changed at the end of September, and the impact will be seen in October as well.
When it comes to everything else, the Creta is still, unsurprisingly, the sales king when it comes to mid-size SUVs and third in the top 25 list at a respectable 18,861 units. The Swift, followed by the WagonR, are the best selling hatchbacks. Unsurprisingly, they are quite low in the list, sixth and seventh. Proof that people now prefer luxurious compact and mid-size SUVs over simple hatchbacks. The Ertiga, which is known for selling like hot cakes, having huge demand both from families and fleet owners, and being a good package, was a surprising tenth place, last in the top 10 leaderboard.
Going further below, Thar almost makes it in the top 10, securing 11th place, which further proves that lifestyle vehicles are now starting to look more appealing to Indians and practicality, utility, and affordability isn’t the only priority. To further prove the point, ironically, the Alto, the people’s champion that was always known to be at the top of the sales leaderboard, is at a low 25th. The Eeco and the Innova Hycross are 14th and 15th, proving the Eeco’s and the Innova’s necessity in Indian roads as they continue their service for almost 2 decades and beyond.
